How Cultural Heritage & Traditions Inspire Meaningful Art
EVENT DETAILS
Who are you and how does it influence the way you see the world?
Our next engaging conversation is with Zainab Sumu, a multi-disciplinary artist, textile, and fashion designer from Sierra Leone. Her work lies at the intersection of art, anthropology, and cultural identity, with a focus on celebrating the resilience and heritage of African cultures. Her creations explore how identity, history, and resilience are embedded in material culture, encouraging a thoughtful dialogue on our interconnectedness and ability to keep going, even during the toughest circumstances.
During this special PFA, Zainab will be sharing insights into her artistic practice, and show us how African traditions, personal narratives, and culture inspire her work in woven sculptures, textiles, and paintings.
Check out Zainab’s work at: www.zainabsumu.com and www.studioznabu.com
*For those interested in learning more about African traditions and art, Zainab recommends the following:
- Flash of the Spirit by Robert Farris Thompson
- African Textiles: Color and Creativity Across a Continent by John Gillow
- The Power of the Mask by Peter T. Markman and Roberta H. Markman
- The works of El Anatsui and Wangechi Mutu
We can’t wait to see you there.
