How many of you have seen the Oscar-winning movie Free Solo? It’s a National Geographic documentary about Professional rock climber Alex Honnold as he attempts to conquer the first free solo climb of famed El Capitan’s 3,000ft vertical rock face at Yosemite National Park.

Can you imagine being the mother to an extreme athlete like that? How about taking on that same climb yourself at 66 years old (setting a world record in the process)? Well, you don’t have to imagine. Instead, come meet her and hear her incredible story.

We are thrilled to welcome fellow Parlay House member and author of The Sharp End of Life: A Mother’s Story, Dierdre Wolownick, who knows a thing or two about reaching all new heights.

She will share her intimate journey and reveal how her climbing achievements reflect a broader story of courage and persistence. And she’ll open up about why, when it comes to reaching any life goal or dream, age is just a number.

Get to know some of our favorite artists...

1. Tamsin Smith is a San Francisco-based poet, painter, and essayist. Her dual art practice began as an exercise in balancing what is for her the cerebral work of word-craft with a more physical experience of painting.

2. Clare Kirkconnell is an artist whose work fluidly blends realism and abstraction across disciplines.Influenced by the natural world, a love of pattern and color, her extensive travels, and a lens of gratitude and awe, she sees the urge to make art as an expression of the spirit.

3. Janet Echelman creates experiential sculpture at the scale of buildings that transform with wind and light. Using unlikely materials like fishnet and atomized water particles, she merges ancient craft with computational design to create artworks that have become focal points for urban life all over the world!

4. Mary Jaeger is a textile and clothing designer who works from her atelier in Brooklyn. Drawing on her experiences in Japan, Asia, Southeast Asia, and Europe, she creates timeless fashion and interior collections that transition seamlessly between seasons, places, and occasions.

5. Julie Spencer is a contemporary artist working in acrylic, oils, and mixed media. Her background as a classically trained violinist and writer can be felt in her mix of fluid brush strokes accented by staccato and letter-like lines to guide the viewers’ eye to “hear” her paintings.

One of the performers is our fabulous Parlay House member and previous speaker, Rebecca Stockley. This original show, created by Lisa Rowland, featured a mostly female cast and put multidimensional, fully fleshed-out, and complicated female characters front and center.

The Bechdel Test (coined by Alison Bechdel) asks three simple questions: 1) Are there two women in the story? 2) Do they ever talk to each other? 3) About something other than a man?

Who else has wondered what it’s like to be on TV, or even felt envious of the stunning women news anchors who seem to have it all together? 🙋‍♀️ From the outside, the career seems almost like a dream…but there’s a lot going on off-camera that’s not always so glamorous.

Jessica has been in the spotlight for more than 20 years as an NBC Bay Area News anchor and Emmy award-winning journalist. She got real with us about her personal story and the loneliness of living in the public eye, touching on mental health struggles, having work done, the influence of social media, and asking for help.

Like many of us, Jessica has faced plenty of misogyny in her workplace over the years, and her discussion gave us all a chance to open up about our own experiences with ageism and career shaming.

With our NYC Petite Museum Tour right around the corner, we’re feeling inspired by the art that moves us, and the women makers who bring it to life! 🎨

Get to know some of our favorite artists...

1. Tamsin Smith is a San Francisco-based poet, painter, and essayist. Her dual art practice began as an exercise in balancing what is for her the cerebral work of word-craft with a more physical experience of painting.

2. Clare Kirkconnell is an artist whose work fluidly blends realism and abstraction across disciplines.Influenced by the natural world, a love of pattern and color, her extensive travels, and a lens of gratitude and awe, she sees the urge to make art as an expression of the spirit.

3. Janet Echelman creates experiential sculpture at the scale of buildings that transform with wind and light. Using unlikely materials like fishnet and atomized water particles, she merges ancient craft with computational design to create artworks that have become focal points for urban life all over the world!

4. Mary Jaeger is a textile and clothing designer who works from her atelier in Brooklyn. Drawing on her experiences in Japan, Asia, Southeast Asia, and Europe, she creates timeless fashion and interior collections that transition seamlessly between seasons, places, and occasions.

5. Julie Spencer is a contemporary artist working in acrylic, oils, and mixed media. Her background as a classically trained violinist and writer can be felt in her mix of fluid brush strokes accented by staccato and letter-like lines to guide the viewers’ eye to “hear” her paintings.
