Dealing with A Narcissist

Narcissists. For some of us, their daily presence in our lives wears us down and tears us apart. For others, we watch them from afar and are completely confounded by the human destruction they leave in their wake.

The complexities of the narcissist can arouse our curiosity, but facing them can arouse our sense of inadequacy and frustration. Want to learn what makes them tick and become more adept at dealing with them?

We are thrilled to bring back three-time Parlay House speaker and longtime member, Wendy Behary who is an internationally-recognized expert on narcissism, and author of the bestselling book: Disarming the Narcissist. Her previous events always sold out completely and have been a Parlay House favorite for years. Since most of us seem to have narcissistic people somewhere in our lives, we welcomed Wendy back to the Parlay From Away stage to help us learn what makes a narcissist tick, how to deal with them, and how to thrive despite their disruption.

Design Thinking to Save Lives

Many students are given assignments in school that encourage them to innovate. Very few come up with ideas that become life-saving solutions worldwide.

In our desire to feature women at the epicenter of positive cascades of good,  we welcome Jane Chen, whose life-saving Embrace Warmer (an innovative infant incubator) has saved over 300,000 vulnerable infants worldwide.

Her use of “design thinking” and mindful leadership has already inspired people like Beyoncé, Mark Benioff, and Barack Obama. We have no doubt that her story will inspire you, too. Jane will share both the process of creating the incubator and the lives it has impacted, as well as key leadership lessons on resilience that she has learned over the last decade.

Lessons From Rock Bottom

Still I Rise

Leading From A Distance

Leadership has become increasingly complicated for all of us. “Leading from a distance” is our new normal, and those of us with responsibility are having to be exceptionally creative as we move forward without the input and feedback that we usually glean from in-person interactions.

Now imagine that as a leader, you are working in a vacuum, and your decisions don’t just affect your team, your family, your business, or your community. They affect millions of lives in the US and abroad.

Tune in as Parlay House welcomes New Jersey Senator and former Presidential Candidate, Cory Booker. He will talk about how he is adjusting to leading-in-place and will give us a glimpse behind the scenes of our government where some of the most difficult decisions are being made.

As he joins us from his home in Newark, he’ll talk about :

  • What it takes to lead from afar
  • How he stays personally connected during social distancing
  • What he is doing to stay grounded in the midst of our global emergency
  • What it feels like to be both a Senator and a candidate for President during these unprecedented times.

New Year, New Heights

How many of you have seen the Oscar-winning movie Free Solo? It’s a National Geographic documentary about professional rock climber Alex Honnold as he attempts to conquer the first free solo climb of famed El Capitan’s 3,000 ft vertical rock face at Yosemite National Park.

Can you imagine being the mother to an extreme athlete like that? How about taking on that same climb yourself at 66 years old (setting a world record in the process)? Well, you don’t have to imagine. Instead, come meet her and hear her incredible story.

We are thrilled to welcome fellow Parlay House member and author of The Sharp End of Life: A Mother’s Story Diedre Wolownick, who knows a thing or two about reaching all new heights. She will share her intimate journey and reveal how her climbing achievements reflect a broader story of courage and persistence. And she’ll open up about why, when it comes to reaching any life goal or dream, age is just a number.

Beating Burnout

Let’s face it. It’s only January and we’re already burned out. Actually, we are still burned out from 2020…

Women, Language & Power

Since childhood, women have been told to sit quietly, lower our voices, wait our turn, avoid attracting attention, and many other orders that men simply weren’t.

Cut to adulthood where many of us struggle to speak up, show our authority at work, ask for raises or promotions, and act on our largest career ambitions. There is an obvious reason women struggle with this more than men and that is… our social conditioning.

We’re diving into the way gender and power influence women’s communication. Leadership and communication coach Susannah Baldwin will uncover proven methods to communicate powerfully and advance professionally. She’ll also share her advice on making new language choices that allow us to channel our full potential.

Tune in as we flip the switch on our conditioning to step into our power and rightful place as leaders. Let’s be the best us we can be.

Taking Up Space

Celebrate Black History Month, Loud and Proud!

What better way to kick-off Black History Month than a conversation with Wanda Holland Greene? A renowned expert in K-12 education, innovation, and empowerment, Wanda will talk about why she fights inequity by “taking up space” – in education and in leadership.

It will be a conversation that makes all of us better. Growing up in Brooklyn, Wanda was one of 12 Black girls bussed into an all-white school in Queens. Called “one of the bus children,” she had to learn early how to assert herself and claim her power. And she has never stopped.

The Science of Happiness

Who doesn’t want a big dose of happiness?

While happiness is obviously a fluctuating emotion, we want to maximize it as much as possible.

If you do too, we hope you’ll join us as we welcome Stanford Instructor Laura Delizonna, PhD. This won’t be a class about calling your glass half-full, and just trying to be positive. Laura will take us straight into the science behind:

  • Understanding and overcoming obstacles to sustainable happiness
  • Using specific tools that are effective in our personal as well as our professional lives
  • Shifting to upward spirals of positivity & possibility – improving even our most impactful relationships
  • Finding control in uncontrollable circumstances

Spoiler alert: happiness takes work. It’s a fluid state of being, not a destination. But we’ll get there faster if we go together!
