Parlay House x Tatcha: Thrive in Your Own Skin

EVENT DETAILS

What do a world-renowned makeup artist, a celebrated musician and a category-making CEO have in common?

Success? Yes! But far more than that.

We hope you will join this extra special Parlay House event celebrating AAPI Heritage Month where we welcome Chloe Flower (pianist, composer, producer), Daniel Martin (makeup artist known for his minimalist style) and Vicky Tsai, (founder of Tatcha). Each will share real life stories and help us understand the challenges they face as Asian Americans trying to create their own American Dream. Chloe, Daniel and Vicky are incredibly real, and the insight they will share should not only help us walk in their shoes, but also to become the best possible allies for the AAPI community.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS

Vicky Tsai
n 2008, Vicky Tsai encountered centuries-old beauty rituals in Kyoto and a philosophy of care and harmony that forever altered her life. The acute dermatitis that had plagued her for years healed, and so did she. Profoundly changed by the experience, she devoted herself to understanding these small miracles and sharing them with others.

Following Tatcha’s founding in 2009, she convened leading skincare scientists and cultural researchers from Japan to create the Tatcha Institute in Tokyo—the company’s R&D heart where innovation works in harmony with tradition. Creating rituals of beauty for modern life, she innovates within tradition to help people reconnect with themselves from skin to soul.

Her work at Tatcha earned her recognition on Inc Magazine’s 100 Top Female Founders List (2021), WWD Beauty Inc’s Founder Award (2019), the Cosmetic Executive Women Female Founder Award (2019), InStyle Magazine’s “Badass 50 Women” List (2018), and the No. 2 fastest-growing privately held company in America led by a woman on the Inc. 5000 list (2015). She is a Wellesley College graduate with a BA in Economics as well as an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Beyond Tatcha, Vicky is a mother and a philanthropist devoted to supporting children’s educational equality through her work as a Global Board Member of Room to Read. She approaches life with a beginner’s mind, offering a quote by Buddhist monk Shunryu Suzuki as way of explanation: “In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s there are few.”

Chloe Flowers:
Chloe Flower is the most talked about pianist in the world following a show-stopping performance with Cardi B at the 2019 Grammy Awards. Chloe is an official Steinway Artist, pianist, composer, producer, activist, and fashion influencer who began playing piano at the age of two. Chloe Flower proudly celebrates her Asian heritage and culture and is a fierce advocate for women’s representation — particularly women of color — in the music industry. Chloe sits on the board of directors for the Liberace Foundation and is a strong voice against human trafficking. She was honored by the Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Activism (CAST) and has spoken regularly at the United Nations as a music education ambassador. She has also worked with Compton Unified School District, Eastlake Detention Center, and Music Unites donating instruments and creating workshops to further music education in public schools. With her self-created Popsical genre — a blend of pop and classical — Chloe Flower is pushing boundaries and reaching new audiences. She has produced songs for Swae Lee, Nas, 2 Chainz, and Celine Dion as well as Tommy Brown (Ariana Grande/Meghan Trainor), Babyface and Mike WiLL Made-It (Beyonce/Miley Cyrus) to name a few.

Daniel Martin:
Daniel Martin is Tatcha’s Global Director of Education and Artistry. He works with founder Vicky Tsai on new product development, editorial content, education, and media and artistry relations. Martin and Tsai’s partnership blossomed out of a mutual belief that beautiful makeup begins with beautiful skin. Martin began his work with Tatcha as an unofficial brand ambassador, spreading the word about Tatcha to fellow makeup artists, beauty editors, and celebrity clients. During this time, he collaborated with the brand on the development of several key products within its bridge collection, including the Kyoto Red Silk Lipstick and the bestselling Silk Canvas Primer.

Prior to his arrival at Tatcha, Daniel served as Brand Ambassador to Dior Beauty and Creative Color Consultant at Honest Beauty.
Martin began his career over twenty years ago, and in the years since his work has been featured in British VOGUE, Marie Claire, ELLE UK, Tatler and Harper’s BAZAAR.

His diverse clientele includes Elisabeth Moss, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Ruth Wilson, Jessica Biel, Olivia Palermo, Michelle Yeoh, Jessica Alba, Gemma Chan, and most notably, Meghan The Duchess of Sussex, for whom he created her wedding-day makeup look in 2018.
Among the many accolades Martin has amassed over his career, he was named the New Guard Artist of the Year by Marie Claire as part of its 2017 Image Maker Awards, Makeup Artist of theYear 2019 by InStyle Magazine and Veteran Makeup Artist of the year in 2021 by Brydie’s Annual Beauty Awards.
